A letter of disillusionment

A close publisher friend wrote to me of his disillusionment. It is heartfelt and with his permission I am publishing it here.

I used to think that people like you and me could make a difference, change attitudes, work better, but the all-consuming avarice distorts everything and it’s fine to dress it all up in worthy platitudes about furthering the science or educating the next generation of doctors etc, but it’s like fleshing out the skeleton of the devil with the tissue of Mother Theresa (see what I’ve done there – all sorts of messages stuffed into that little simile!). Shame really, cos I genuinely believe that publishing can be both a force for social and moral and intellectual good and still be profitable. Preaching to the converted I suspect …
